Guided by Vision

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Turjuman Award was created to honor exceptional international translations that contribute to cultural and intellectual progress. These works are vital for building bridges between East and West, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of shared human achievements.

Translations are the backbone of a thriving publishing industry, helping to preserve the nuances of language while sparking new ideas that drive global dialogue. By bringing diverse voices to new audiences, they play a key role in shaping a more connected and culturally rich world.

Award Value

With a total prize pool of AED 1.4 million, the Turjuman Award generously rewards excellence in translation. The winning translator receives AED 100,000, while the remaining AED 1.3 million is split between the foreign publisher holding the translation rights (70%) and the Arab publisher releasing the first edition (30%).

Last Year Winners

Participation Conditions

    1. The Award is granted to translations of intellectual, cultural, and creative publications based on or inspired by Arab and Muslim civilizations.
    2. Competition is open to all Arab and international publishing houses with foreign translations from an original Arabic publication in its first edition.
    3. Published hardcopies are accepted, and each publishing house can submit multiple publications for consideration.
    4. Submissions must have been publicized between 2015 and 2025.
    5. University theses are not accepted.
    6. Proof of copyrights and legitimacy of translation, publishing, and circulation must be submitted.
    7. All participating works will not be returned.


    Required Documents:

    1. Detailed documentation and a 500-word summary about the nominated book.
    2. Four hard copies of the translated book and one Arabic copy for each work.
    3. Participants must complete the Award's electronic form on the website.

Arbitration and Criteria

  1. Participation in the Award implies acceptance of all conditions, commitment to arbitration results, and refraining from appealing.
  2. Submissions are accepted annually from November to September.
  3. The winner will be announced at the next edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF).

Evaluation Criteria

A specialized committee evaluates submissions based on:

  1. Language strength.
  2. Topic significance.
  3. Value added by translation.
  4. Accuracy in transfer between languages.
  5. Precise translation of terms.
  6. Knowledge of translated topics.
  7. Adherence to scientific honesty.
  8. Avoidance of grammar, style, or typing mistakes.
